Somewhat unexpectedly, I find myself back in Kota Kinabalu. More on that next week… or maybe the week after. Let’s see how things unfold.
After earlier messaging Simon to say, “hey, I’m coming to visit… later today”… or something along those lines in maybe a more ribald manner! He picked me up from the airport and we went for dinner at a rather nice new spot in town. KK isn’t exactly spoilt for great food options, so it’s a welcome addition, and I hope it does well. It also happens to be directly opposite the most popular expat bar in town and, with it being a Wednesday, it was quiz night.
I used to be a frequent enough visitor that I’ve been known to win the odd pitcher, typically margarita or sangria. So we thought we’d stop by for the final round.
Simon and I became a team of three when we invited an Argentine lady, travelling on her own, to join us. She said she would not be much help. She was right, but that was not the point. It’s the kind of place where travellers can easily meet other people, hence why it is popular in town.
Name the five countries in Europe that don’t have an airport… no problem. Name the first kind of animal to win a wartime bravery award… no problem. Name the lead singer of Nirvana… no problem. Name the type of dog Scooby Doo is… it rhymes with the name of the lead singer of Nirvana… we knew it was blindingly obvious but we just couldn’t think of it, and it became even more annoying when we lost the quiz by a single point. No pitcher of booze for us but honestly I can’t say I was that fussed.
I’d just spent the last 24 hours in Singapore airport. It’s still my favourite airport, and I still (some say weirdly) enjoy sleeping on the floor of airports… it brings back that travelling feeling. But I was happy to head for a proper bed, especially as I’d be up at 03:30 to watch Arsenal.
Anyway, during one of the musical interludes between questions, this week’s song came on. A track I haven’t heard in a long time, but I remember loving the album when it came out. It still stands the test of time… even if the band didn’t really do anything of note after their debut.
