Although this band has been going for decades, from the ’60s until now, this particular song is from the ’70s. I don’t hear anyone talking about it, but I absolutely love it.
The bass line is amazing. The timing of it, the build-up, the crescendos… just the general unpredictability of it. I haven’t got the technical or musical knowledge to describe it properly, but I like it. I like it a lot.
So, this is the next entry in the little ’70s rock-and-roll series, although it feels a bit funky to be rock and roll. There’s definitely a lot of old-school R&B and blues in there. I think some of it could be sampled really well. There are so many little bits you could pick apart and put back together in creative ways, which is why it made the list.
Over the past week I’ve also been sharing mixtapes from DJs I enjoy with my nephew, although as mixtapes, they won’t make it onto this playlist. Mixing and creating are different skills, and he enjoys both. It has been fascinating to hear how he thinks about taking a sound from one place and turning it into something of his own.
That’s something I miss when I’m overseas. I hear about his progress, but I don’t often get to experience these small moments in his musical journey first-hand. Being home has given me the chance to chat with him, share music and see just how good he’s becoming.
Also, an honourable mention has to go to his party at the weekend. It was being held in my sister and brother-in-law’s garden, so we took the dogs for a walk along the canal to a pub a couple of miles away to give them some space.
When we stepped out of the pub a couple of hours later, we could hear this soft bass in the distance. We didn’t have to walk far before realising it was coming all the way from my sister’s garden, which was very amusing. We followed it back and joined him and his mates for the end of the party, which was really good fun.
